This course prepares students to pursue BARBICIDE® Certification by introducing the principles of infection prevention, sanitation, disinfection, and professional safety practices used throughout the beauty and personal care industry. Designed for students interested in cosmetology, barbering, hairstyling, nail technology, esthetics, and related career pathways, the course emphasizes maintaining clean, safe, and professional service environments. Students will explore the differences between cleaning, sanitizing, disinfecting, and sterilizing; examine how microorganisms and pathogens can spread; and learn appropriate procedures for handling tools, equipment, workstations, and shared surfaces. Instruction will also address hand hygiene, personal protective equipment, cross-contamination prevention, disinfectant safety, and the importance of following product labels and workplace procedures. Through instructor-led discussions, visual demonstrations, workplace scenarios, interactive activities, and certification review exercises, students will develop an understanding of infection control responsibilities in professional salon and barbershop environments. The course emphasizes both certification readiness and the development of safe, responsible professional habits.
The final project can include: A Salon Infection Prevention Plan – A written or visual plan outlining appropriate cleaning, disinfection, personal hygiene, and workstation maintenance procedures for a hypothetical salon or barbershop. A Sanitation and Disinfection Procedure Guide – An illustrated reference guide describing safe procedures for commonly used beauty industry tools, equipment, and surfaces. A Workplace Safety Scenario Analysis – A collection of realistic scenarios in which students identify infection control concerns, explain potential risks, and recommend appropriate corrective actions. A Professional Safety Checklist – A checklist designed to help salon professionals maintain consistent infection prevention practices before, during, and after client services. A Certification Readiness Portfolio – A collection of practice questions, terminology reviews, case studies, and instructional activities demonstrating preparation for the BARBICIDE® Certification assessment.
