This course prepares students for the AP Computer Science A (AP CSA) exam through an in-depth study of Java programming, object-oriented design, and computational problem-solving. Students will develop a strong foundation in programming by learning how to write, test, debug, and analyze Java programs while exploring key computer science concepts such as variables, control structures, methods, classes, arrays, ArrayLists, inheritance, and algorithms. Through hands-on coding activities, collaborative projects, and AP-style practice problems, students will strengthen their computational thinking skills and gain experience solving real-world programming challenges. The course emphasizes software development best practices, logical reasoning, and code efficiency, preparing students for both the AP Computer Science A exam and future coursework in computer science and software engineering.
The final project can include: A Java Programming Application – A fully functional Java program demonstrating object-oriented programming concepts, user interaction, and problem-solving. A Code Documentation Portfolio – Well-documented source code with comments, testing results, and explanations of design decisions and algorithms. An AP Practice Portfolio – A collection of completed AP-style free-response questions, multiple-choice practice, code tracing exercises, and debugging activities.
